1
Research the different options of lawn trimmers and try them at your local hardware store. The best way to determine the correct weight and size you are looking for is to pick them up and try them out. You may be surprised by the difference in size and weight of each type.

2
Determine what type of power you want in your lawn trimmer. There are two basic types: gas and electric (plug and battery operated). There are distinct advantages and disadvantages to each type. The most powerful option is gas, but it can also be the most expensive, require a lot maintenance and weigh the most. Electric is cheaper, but you are also limited. Electric trimmers with a plug are limited to where you can use it by the length of your extension cord. Battery powered trimmers are lightweight, cordless and don't require gas, but they require a charge and only last as long as the battery does.

Choose what options you want your lawn trimmer to have. Some lawn trimmers have built-in edge guides for edging along sidewalks, driveways and flower beds and others have adjustable heads that rotate. Figure out if you will need removable blades. Most lawn trimmers cut grass and weeds using thick line on a spool. Some trimmers allow you to use both line and plastic heads for heavy duty trimming.

Decide on a size and pick a lawn trimmer that will meet the needs of your outdoor space. Smaller lawn trimmers are available in cutting widths of 9 inches to 12 inches and large lawn trimmers are available in cutting widths of 16 inches and above. If you are using your lawn trimmer around the yard, a small or medium trimmer will suffice. However, if you are looking to do heavy weed removal and cover a large area, look to purchase a trimmer with a large cutting width.
