How to Make Prepared Mustard
Before buying mustard at your local grocery store, consider making your own with mustard seeds. Mustard seeds come from three varieties of mustard plants in three different colors--brown, white and black. You can make prepared mustard by combining ground dry mustard with a liquid. By simply adding different liquids and dry seasonings, you can make a variety of recipes. Things You'll Need
- Mustard seeds
- Water
- Mortar
- 4 tablespoons dry mustard powder
- 4 tablespoons vinegar
- ¼ tsp. turmeric
- Whisk
- Stainless steel bowl

Soak the mustard seeds in water. They need to soak for 2 hours.

Use a mortar to grind the mustard seeds. Continue to grind the seeds until the texture is smooth without lumps.

Set aside 4 tablespoons of the dry mustard powder.

Whisk the mustard powder, vinegar and turmeric in a small stainless steel bowl.

Allow the mustard to sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cover the mustard and place in the refrigerator.

Tips & Warnings
To make a large quantity of mustard, mix the powder with your choice of liquid in a 1 to 1 ratio.
You can substitute vinegar with any liquid, such as beer, wine or apple cider.
Add other dry ingredients to flavor mustard, such as cinnamon or ground black pepper.
Allow the mustard to set for 2 to 3 weeks to reduce the strong flavor.
Use non-corrosive cookware when making mustard with vinegar.
