How to Clean a Dryer Hose on a Kenmore

The Kenmore dryer operates by blowing air over the heating element into the dryer drum and out of the dryer through a hose. When the clothes in the dryer are taking too long to dry, there are several things to consider. Before troubleshooting the heating elements and thermostats, inspect and clean the dryer hose. The dryer hose carries the warm, moist air out of the dryer. When the Kenmore dryer hose becomes clogged, the moist air recirculates into the dryer. Cleaning the dryer hose will resolve this problem. Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Kenmore dryer power cord. Move the dryer away from the back wall to make room to work.

    • 2

Loosen the clamp that secures the dryer hose to the exhaust port on the rear of the unit with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the dryer hose off of the dryer port.

    • 3

Insert the vacuum hose into the exhaust port and extract as much of the lint as possible. Feed the end of the vacuum hose as far into the exhaust port as possible without forcing the hose. Finish cleaning the inside of the exhaust port with a lint brush.

    • 4

Loosen the clamp that secures the dryer hose to the outside dryer vent with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove a majority of the lint with the vacuum if the dryer hose is made of rigid metal. Do not use a vacuum to clean the inside of a flexible dryer hose. The vacuum could tear the material, requiring a replacement hose. Remove the lint from the flexible hose with a lint brush.

    • 5

Vacuum the outside vent pipe where the dryer hose connects. Because of moisture from outside air, lint tends to gather and stick to the vent opening.

    • 6

Clean around the outside vent and use a lint brush to remove any lint from under the vent hood. Check the operation of any louvers or doors that open and close. They should move freely with little resistance.

    • 7

Return inside and connect the dryer hose to the outside dryer vent and the exhaust port on the dryer. Position each securing clamp back into place and tighten each clamp with the Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 8

Plug in the power cord and return the Kenmore dryer back into its working position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Replace flexible dryer hose that has holes or other damage. When possible replace the hose with rigid dryer duct work.

  • Always disconnect power from appliances before attempting any repairs.
