How to Care for Your Triathlon Wetsuit

Proper care of wetsuits, even ones made with newer materials and the latest technology, is essential so they will perform race after race and last longer than one season. From rinsing the wetsuit after each use to putting it on properly, you can extend the life of your suit and rely on it to make you feel more comfortable in the water and get you through the swim faster.

      Take off the wetsuit and rinse it with fresh cold water, inside and out, immediately after a race or open-water swim. Lay it out flat to dry.

      Rinse the wetsuit inside and out again with cold water when you get home. If you have a specialty shampoo you can also wash the wetsuit, then rinse it out completely with cold water.

      Lay the wetsuit flat to dry, inside out. Before you put it in the storage bag, make sure it is completely dry.

      Repair any holes, tears and rips with a wetsuit-specific patch kit. You can find these online or at a triathlon shop.

      When putting a wetsuit on, make sure your nails are trimmed. You can also place a plastic bags on your hands and feet when putting the wetsuit on to keep it from tearing.

      Use anti-chafing products made for wetsuits to prevent chafing and to help get the wetsuit on and off easier. Using other non-approved products can ruin your wetsuit.

      Store the wetsuit in a cool, dry place. It is fine to leave it in a storage bag.

  • Do not hang your wetsuit.

  • Do not use commercial shampoo on the wetsuit. Use shampoo made for specifically for wetsuits.

  • Do not let your wetsuit dry in the sun.

  • Do not use your wetsuit in a pool or chlorinated water.
