How to Cook in Hobo Pie Pans

Hobo pie pans, also known as hobo irons, are a cooking device similar to today's electric tabletop panini or sandwich makers. The difference is the hobo pie pan is used by holding the pan by the long handle over an open fire or coals to cook the food inside. Made popular by the hobo transients of the Great Depression, these pans are used today for camping and outdoor cookouts. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Butter a slice of bread and place it, butter side down, in one side of the hobo pie pan.

    • 2

Place chosen sandwich toppings on the bread in the pan. This can be meat, cheese, vegetables or a combination.

    • 3

Butter a second slice of bread and place it, butter side up, on the contents of the sandwich in the pan.

    • 4

Fold the top half of the hobo pan over the bottom half, and secure the latch if the hobo pan you have has one. Otherwise, hold the two handles securely in one hand to keep the device from coming apart.

    • 5

Hold the hobo pie pan over an open fire, or place on hot coals, and cook the sandwich for 4 to 6 minutes. Flip the pan over and cook the opposite side for about the same amount of time.
