How to Become a Weight-Loss Coach

If you have a genuine desire to help people and have had success at motivating others, you have a chance to become a life coach. When you can combine those abilities with knowledge of dietary needs and how the muscular system works, you have a chance to become a weight-loss coach. This will allow you to work with people who have been trying to improve their conditioning but have had little success.

Instructions

    • 1

Earn academic qualifications to work in the weight-loss field. Get a degree in biology, kinesiology or physiology. You need to be grounded in the basics of how the body works and how it responds to exercise, along with what dietary changes will do to the body.

    • 2

Get organized. Build a plan you think will help all people lose weight, get in better shape and improve the quality of their lives. This plan can be adjusted to each person's individual needs, but your basic plan should include cardiovascular training, strength training and dietary instructions.

    • 3

Go to health clubs and apply for the position of weight-loss coach. Even if the health club does not have an opening or does not have that position to fill, the manager will have connections in the field and may know of positions in your area, and she might be willing to point you in the right direction if you have an impressive plan. Health clubs will want to see your technical knowledge and organization methods, and you will have to show you want to help people lose weight.

    • 4

Listen to clients when they tell their story. Learn when they got heavy and what prompted it as well as what has prevented them from taking the weight off in the past. Find out what is motivating them right now to lose weight. You can use all this information to help them.

If you are in great shape, you may intimidate certain potential clients. Work on ways to build their confidence. Reinforce that they too can get in better shape and lose weight---and that you want them to succeed. You should be supportive but firm and find a balance between the two.
