How to Make Paper Prairie Bonnets
Children often have to dress up during school in period dress ranging from Colonial days in America to citizens of foreign countries. When your young daughter comes to you and tells you she needs a bonnet like in "Little House on the Prairie," you'll now be prepared. Paper bonnets are fun and easy to make. With a little supervision, your little girl can make and decorate her bonnet however she likes.
Things You'll Need
- Paper bag in size 12 or 16
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Construction paper
- Tape
- 5 feet of ribbon
Instructions
-
Making your Bonnet
-
1
Open the bag.
-
2
Turn it on its side and cut up the middle of the long narrow side, stopping about 4 inches from the end of the bag.
-
-
3
Cut across the narrow side of the bag where you stopped your vertical cut. You should now have cut a "T" in the narrow side of the bag.
-
4
Turn the bag over, so the cut side is down on the table.
-
5
Slightly open the bag, so the open side is flared out and you can see of all the outside of the bag.
Making the Shape
-
6
Cut an arch out of the opening of the bag. Frame it to look like the rounded brim of a bonnet.
-
7
Open the bag. Fold in the corners to give the back of the bonnet its rounded shape.
-
8
Fold the piece of construction paper or heavy card stock in half length-wise.
-
9
Tape it to the inside of the brim of the hat, about 2 inches from the back of the hat. This will give the bonnet its rounded shape.
Adding the Ribbon
-
10
Turn the bonnet right side up.
-
11
Cut a slit on either side of the bonnet at the fold near the bottom. Make the slit just wide enough for the ribbon to slip through.
-
12
Slip the ribbon through the holes with the ribbon going over the bonnet.
-
13
Place on the child's head and tie the ribbon in a bow under her chin.

Tips & Warnings
If you'd like to make the bonnet a little fancier, you could tape some lace or doily edges along the outside of the brim.
