How to Crochet Ear Warmers

Crochet ear warmers wrap around your head like a wide headband. They keep your ears and forehead warm, and can also keep your hair out of your eyes during winter activities such as skiing and sledding. Using the single crochet and double crochet stitches, you can make crochet ear warmers in less than an hour. A wool-based yarn will keep your ears toasty, or you may want to try a yarn made from fleece material, such PolarKnit®, that is scientifically designed for greater warmth.

Things You'll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn

Instructions

    • 1

Form a slip knot in your yarn (see Resources) and place the loop on the hook.

    • 2

Make chain stitches (see Resources to review basic crochet stitches if necessary) until the row is about one inch wide. You are starting at the back of the ear warmers, where the fabric is narrowest.

    • 3

Chain 1 stitch, then starting in the second chain from the hook, make a single crochet stitch in each chain loop across your row by inserting the hook through the middle of the chain loop, wrapping the yarn over the hook and pulling it back out through the chain stitch (two loops on your hook), then yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook.

    • 4

Turn at the end of the row and chain one again to start the next row. Continue working in single crochet stitches across every row until the piece measure approximately two inches long.

    • 5

Turn at the end of the last row and chain three. This counts as your first double crochet stitch. Double crochet into the base of the chain three, to increase the number of stitches in that row by one, by wrapping the yarn around hook before you insert it into the next stitch, then pull a loop through. Yarn over again and pull through two loops on the hook twice.

    • 6

Double crochet across the row, then double crochet again in the last stitch on that row to increase that side of the row as well.

    • 7

Repeat steps 5 and 6 five times to increase to fabric on both sides.

    • 8

Turn, chain three and double crochet across the rows without increasing until the fabric is long enough for the widest section to cover your ears. The increased rows should rest just behind your ear and the narrow strip at the back of your head.

    • 9

Turn, chain three, double crochet the next two stitches together for a decrease (see Resources), then double crochet across the row to the last two stitches. Double crochet the last two stitches together. Repeat this step five times to reverse the shaping on the ear warmers with decreases.

    • 10

Work in single crochet stitch rows until this end of the fabric matches the opposite end in terms of length.

    • 11

Try the ear warmers on your head again. There should be enough fabric at the back for the short ends to meet or overlap a little bit.

    • 12

Chain one and pull up a long loop to cut, leaving a long tail of yarn. Use the yarn needle and this tail to sew the narrow ends of the ear warmers together so that the circle of fabric fits comfortably around your head without slipping. Weave in any loose ends with the yarn needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use bulky yarn to crochet ear warmers. The rows will require less stitches because they will be larger, and you will need to use a larger hook to avoid splitting the fibers as you make your loops.
