Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your home to determine where exactly the black beetles are located. Black beetles prefer remote areas of a building that are dark in both their larval and adult stages. Among the many places carpet beetles can be found is behind baseboards, in the stuffing of furniture, woolen items and stored cereals. Carpet beetles feed on materials such as dried food, dog food, dead insects, leather, beans, wool, pollen and hair.

    • 2

Take steps to prevent the black beetles from entering your house. Check outside flowers and firewood to see if they have carpet beetles before bringing them inside. Make sure screens are tightly closed to prevent the beetles from flying into the house. Remove piles of leaves and other biodegradable materials that are near the house. Turn off lights near the house to avoid attracting beetles.

    • 3

Clean all inside areas (and items) as thoroughly as possible where you find the carpet beetles. Vacuum to remove all materials that serve as a source of food for the beetles. Disinfect the areas when possible.

    • 4

Discard all items that have been severely infested by the black beetles. Food, in particular, should be thrown away immediately. Some items like clothes can be saved by placing them in cold storage. Other items can be frozen for a week. The cold temperatures kill the larvae of the black beetles.

    • 5

Apply various insecticides both inside and outside the house to control the black beetles. Get some professional advice, and follow all instructions on the insecticides very carefully.

    • 6

Bring in a professional exterminator if all else fails.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't use insecticides unless they're absolutely necessary. Prevention is preferred over chemicals to get rid of black beetles.
