How to Set the DNS in Hostgator
HostGator, a web hosting company, allows you to host websites that are not registered with it. This is accomplished by pointing your website to HostGator's name servers. However, you can also point domains that are registered with HostGator to other name servers, allowing you to host websites on places other than HostGator. Both of these changes are easy to make, and you just need to know your way around the control panel for HostGator or other service that you are using.

Set the DNS for Domains Registered with HostGator
-
1
Go to the Register a Domain page on the HostGator site (see Resources). This will redirect you to a RegistryRocket.com domain because HostGator is simply a domain reseller. Log in to this site with your domain name and password. If you don't have a password, email HostGator or call its support line to get one assigned to you.
-
2
Scroll down the web page and find the DNS settings portion of the domain manager. Click the "Edit" button in this section and change the name servers to those provided by your hosting company. Click the "Save" button once you are finished.
-
-
3
Verify that the DNS changes you requested have been made. (If the changes were unsuccessful, you may have to contact HostGator to have your custom DNS servers registered.) You will need to wait up to 48 hours for the DNS changes to fully propagate across the Internet. Once this time passes, your domain will point to the new DNS server.
Set the DNS for Domains Not Registered with HostGator

4
Log in to the account that you used to register your domains. This may be with a company like eNom, GoDaddy or similar. Once logged in, look for the DNS or Name Server section of the control panel and navigate to that section.
-
5
Change the DNS server addresses for the domain you want to point to HostGator to the following: ns1.hostgator.com, ns2.hostgator.com. Bear in mind that you should only do this once you have set up the domain name inside of HostGator.
-
6
Wait for the name server updates to propagate across the Internet. In some cases, this can happen almost immediately, but you may have to wait up to 48 hours for the changes to take full effect.
