How to Paint Walls in Children's Rooms

Kids change every day, whether it be their favorite clothes, colors, friends or music. Painting a children's room requires preparation, which is the key to the success of getting the paint to last until they decide that it's time for another change. Instructions

    • 1

Remove furniture and other items from the child's room. The room should be empty before preparing it for painting.

    • 2

Wash the walls with a mix of four parts warm water to one part mild dish detergent. Use a sponge to clean the walls thoroughly and let dry.

    • 3

Fix any spots on the walls that may need repair. This includes holes, dings, dents or scratches in the walls. Fill in the spots with wall compound and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Scour the dried compound with 120 grit sandpaper until smooth and wipe with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust from the child's room.

    • 5

Utilize the painter's tape to tape off any molding or window frames that you want to keep from any contact with paint. Tuck the edges of the painter's tape around the item you want to paint off for total coverage.

    • 6

Open your paint can with the metal opener. Stir the paint you chose for the child's room, making sure you stir the bottom as well as the top of the can to get an even mix. Pour the paint into the paint tray.

    • 7

Submerge a paintbrush only halfway up the bristles with paint. Cut in areas like the borders and corners around the room, and areas that will be difficult to reach with the paint rollers.

    • 8

Roll the paint roller over the paint tray several times back and forth to cover the roller evenly. Roll a letter W on each section of the children's room wall and roll it out within a two-foot area to get the maximum paint distribution.

    • 9

Cover each wall entirely with an even coat before starting on another wall. Once you have finished painting all the walls, let them dry as stated on the paint can. Check each wall for thinned paint; you may have to place a second coat on the walls. If a second coat is required, make sure you paint it the same way you did with the first coat. Let the paint dry completely before bringing the furniture back into the children's room.

    • 10

Add any pictures or memorabilia on the walls after waiting at least 24 hours after the painting of the room.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ventilate the area in which you are working by opening the windows and using a fan to push the fumes out.

  • Wear a dust mask when preparing and painting the room.
