When you sew a buttonhole on a Shark Euro-Pro Sewing Machine, the buttonhole foot will automatically gauge the correct size according to the button you're using. If you mark the buttonhole position carefully and set the foot down on the markings, you'll sew buttonholes with neat, finished edges very quickly. Instructions

    • 1

Mark the buttonhole placement on the garment using tailor's chalk. Draw a horizontal line on top of the button and another horizontal line on the bottom of the button.

    • 2

Turn the pattern dial to buttonhole, which is a long rectangle.

    • 3

Put the buttonhole foot on the machine.

    • 4

Line up the buttonhole foot with the markings on the garment. The open space in the foot should be centered over the buttonhole area, with the front of the foot sitting on the bottom horizontal line. The machine will tack over the bottom of the buttonhole first.

    • 5

Open the button holder at the back of the foot and place the button on it.

    • 6

Lower the buttonhole lever and push it back.

    • 7

Hold the upper thread loosely and start sewing. The machine will tack horizontally across the bottom of the buttonhole, vertically up the left side, horizontally across the top of the buttonhole, and vertically down the right side.

    • 8

Stop sewing when the buttonhole is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sew a buttonhole on stretch fabric as above, but before beginning to sew, with the presser foot in the up position, hook a gimp thread onto the back of the buttonhole foot. Bring both ends of the gimp thread to the front of the buttonhole foot, insert them into the grooves and tie them. Set the stitch width to the diameter of the gimp thread. Sew the buttonhole. Trim any excess thread.
