How to Follow Directions in Kindergarten

If you have a student in kindergarten who is having a hard time following directions, make sure your directions are easy to understand and execute. Following directions can be something that a student can learn, says Daisy Johnson, kindergarten teacher in Fargo, North Dakota. She offers a few steps for kindergarten students who are having trouble following the rules.

Instructions

Listen carefully to what the teacher has said. All kindergarten teachers will clearly explain directions, so you can know what you are supposed to be doing. The closer you listen, the easier it is to know what to do.

    • 2

Ask questions if you don't understand a direction or rule. Don't just guess what you think you are supposed to do. If you aren't absolutely sure, raise your hand and ask your teacher to tell you what the directions are. Don't whisper to ask a friend. Ask the person who gave you the directions in the first place.

Pay attention to what other students are doing. If you see that everyone else is lining up to go somewhere, or if everyone is putting on their gym shoes, chances are you might have missed a direction to do those things too. Think about what you might have missed, and then follow the same direction that everyone else is doing.

Remember what happens each day. Most kindergarten classrooms have set schedules, so if you remember what comes after lunch, or what the first thing is you do in the morning, you will have a better chance of following directions.

    • 5

Don't talk when you aren't supposed to be talking. Ms. Johnson says that these are the things students often do that prevent them from listening and following directions. If you stay quiet when you are supposed to, you will hear the directions that your teacher gives you and be able to follow them.
