How to Paint a Porcelain Toilet

      Wash and dry the toilet with bleach spray and paper towels. Clean it very thoroughly so that the paint will stick.

      Remove any rugs and anything else that might get paint on it. Paper the floor with newspapers or dropcloths and tape them down securely to protect the floor.

      Purchase glossy oil paints meant for shiny porcelain. Check the label to see if it can be used on porcelain. Buy paintbrushes of varying thicknesses for your design.

      Paint in one direction only and use light strokes for your design. Use flexible stencils if you want to make a patterned design. If you make a mistake, you can easily wipe it off with a damp sponge before it dries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not touch the wet paint for two days. After it is completely dry, paint some clear varnish over your design to keep the paint from chipping or fading over time.
