How to Connect an Apple Computer to a Print Server
Apple computers are known for their easy networking, reliability and functionality, however, some print servers, usually those set up by a computer running the Windows operating system, will not allow Apple computers to connect properly. There is software available to fix this problem. It only needs to installed on the Apple computer and requires no changes to the print server. Save time and frustration by connecting your Apple computer to a local print server.

1
Install Gutenprint on your Apple compute (see References). Because of the language the print server normally uses to "talk" to Windows based computers, the Mac OS X printer software will not allow a connection to be made. To fix this problem, go to the Gutenprint homepage and download the latest drivers. Run the installer to set up your Apple computer for printer networking.

2
Open "System Preferences" on your Apple computer via the Apple menu. Click "Print and Fax" to open the printer settings for your computer. You will see a list of printers already set up, or none at all if the network printer is the first.

3
Click the small "+" symbol below the printer list to open the Add Printer dialog. Click "IP Printer" at the top of the window.
-
4
Type in the IP address of the print server, as well as the name of the print server and a name for the location setting if so desired. If you do not know the IP of the server, it can be found by opening the Print Server's preferences on its host computer, and clicking on the "Networking" tab. If you do not have access to the print server's host computer, ask the computer administrator for the server's IP address.

5
Click "Add" at the bottom of the Add Printer dialog to add the printer to your available printers list. You should now be able to print for the print server as you would any stand-alone printer.
