How to Set Up a Flush Trim Router Bit
A flush trim router bit is primarily used to trim laminates and veneers, and it can be used along with a pattern to make exact copies. Flush trim router bits come in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch shafts. The flush trim router comes in many lengths and style to include: v groove, top bearing, bottom bearing, top and bottom bearing, down shear and spiral cut flush trim router bits to name a few. However, most will have the same set up procedure.
Things You'll Need
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection
- Router
- Flush trim router bit
- Pattern
- Projects wood
- Non-slip pad

First put on your safety glasses and hearing protection.

Unplug router before installing the flush trim router bit.

Place your wood project and template on a non-slip pad with the pattern side facing down.

Set the router down on your project with the flush trim router bit overhanging the edge.

Adjust the flush trim router bits height so that the entire bearing is resting against the pattern.

Lock the router in place. You are now ready to use the flush trim router bit.

Tips & Warnings
The pattern material needs to be made from 3/4-inch material.
Use a bandsaw to cut on the outside of the pattern line, you will only want to leave about 1/8-inch of material for the flush trim router bit to remove.
Never use a router bit that is dull or damaged.
Tighten the router bit securely and recheck periodically for possible slippage or "run-out" due to wear.
Always use a router table and fence whenever possible for safety.
