Creating a Star Background in the Editing Program Gimp
-
1
Open Gimp. If you do not already have the program downloaded onto your computer, follow the downloading and installing instructions that accompany the free software online.
-
2
Create a new workbook. Click on "File" and choose "New" from the dropdown list. Input your desired image dimensions and press "OK."
-
-
3
Click on the "Bucket Fill Tool" icon located in the main toolbar. Open the "Change Foreground Color" box by clicking on the foreground color rectangle (located just below the collection of icons and above the name of the tool on the toolbar); select the color you wish to appear as the background color of your image and press "OK." Move your cursor to the workbook and click your mouse button; this will apply your chosen color as the background.
-
4
Select the "Paintbrush Tool" from the toolbar and the foreground color of your choice. Hold down the "Shift" key and click in the middle of your workbook to create a starting dot, while moving your cursor away from the dot. When you are hovering over your selected destination, click again and release the "Shift" key; this will create the first of five needed lines to result in a five-point star.
-
5
Hold down the "Shift" key and continue to click at desired release points. If the original dot marks the top of your five-point star, and the first line extends to the bottom-right point, drag your cursor (while holding down "Shift") to where a top-left point should exist and click; keep pressing the "Shift" key and drag your cursor to the location of a top-right point before clicking down. Continue the process to create a bottom-left point and then to connect that point to your original dot.
-
6
Repeat steps 4 and 5, varying the starting location within the workbook as desired, until your workbook is covered with stars according to your tastes. Save the file using the image extension of your choice: .jpg, .png, or so on.

Tips & Warnings
If you desire a different size brushstroke, you can adjust the paintbrush size by increasing or decreasing the "Scale" in the accompanying brush dialog toolbar.
Accidentally releasing the "Shift" key during the star-creation process can cause undesired results. If this happens, simply click "Undo Paintbrush" under the "Edit" selection until your workbook file is back to the point you can begin again.
