How to Find a Keylogger on a PC

As the name implies, a keylogger keeps track--or logs--all of the keys pressed on your computer's keyboard. Keyloggers serve as a great resource, especially for parents who want to monitor their child's computer activity. Criminals, though, also use keyloggers to steal private information, including private numbers, passwords, and account details. Check your computer on a regular basis to locate any keyloggers installed on your PC.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase or download two or three anti-spyware programs. Although one anti-spyware program protects your computer, several protect you even better. That's because each programs searches different areas on your PC. You can find free spyware programs online or purchase them at an electronics or super store.

    • 2

Install each of the anti-spyware programs on your computer. To do so, follow the owner's manual or call the manufacturer. (Each program varies in installation.)

    • 3

Run each of your programs individually since running more than one at a time can slow your PC down (or even cause it freeze up).

    • 4

Review the results on your anti-spyware after each one has run its course. The program will have a list of all suspicious files it found and provide the option to remove them from your computer entirely. To see whether any keyloggers were found, look at the type of malicious spyware found on your PC (usually listed next to the name of the file). The type of file will be called a "keylogger."

Repeat this process on a weekly basis to locate any future keyloggers that may appear on your PC.
