How to Understand Kenmore Sewing Machines

Read your manual. Take the time to order a new manual if you do not have one for your machine (see Resources below). Check for and note down the entire model number to be sure that you get the right manual for your sewing machine.

Determine whether you have a mechanical or computerized Kenmore sewing machine. Look for a control screen to identify a computerized machine. Check for dials, knobs, or sliding controls for a mechanical machine.

Remove the cover using a small flathead screwdriver and access the drop in bobbin. Use a small brush to clean lint and fuzz off of the feed dogs. Lift the bobbin out of the shuttle and clean away any dust or dirt.

Add a single drop of oil to the bobbin shuttle. Reassemble the drop in bobbin mechanism on your Kenmore machine.

Check your manual and add a single drop of sewing machine oil to your Kenmore sewing machine as recommended.

Place a new needle in your Kenmore machine, tightening the thumb screw by hand. Thread your Kenmore machine, using the threading diagrams in the manual or online (see Resources below).
