How to Wash a Racing Jacket

Racing jackets, like those that are worn by your favorite NASCAR drivers, can be hard to wash. They are usually covered in patches and made of a variety of materials, making it difficult to choose what cycle to wash it on. Always err on the side of caution and be careful when washing your racing jacket. You certainly don't want to hurt the integrity of the jacket, while keeping the colors bright and the jacket functional. Does this Spark an idea?

Zip up all of the various zips, fasten the clasps and press together the Velcro on the jacket. Make sure that all of the pockets are sealed and the jacket is closed all the way. This is because the different textures on the jacket could decrease the usefulness of the Velcro as it washes, or the hard metal pieces could tear the jacket. Turn the jacket inside out before adding to the washing machine.

Place the jacket in the washing machine on it's own, on the delicate cycle. The colors from the patches and badges could bleed onto other fabrics, making it a mess for your other laundry. The delicate cycle will gently wash, without stretching the jacket. If you want to be even more careful, skip the washing machine and hand wash.

Use a gentle detergent, like Woolite or a baby detergent. These are the safest types of detergent, as they are non-abrasive. They are also the detergents that are recommended by racing suit manufacturer, Sparco USA. Wash in cold water, and refrain from using any type of bleach, even color safe varieties.

Remove from the washer and hang on a rack to dry. Never tumble dry the jacket in a dryer; the heat could severely affect the leather portions of the jacket, as well as melting the glue that may be holding some of the patches that are on it.

Allow the jacket to dry completely before putting it on.
