1
Choose how the grout will be treated: painted the same color as the tile, taped over to protect the original grout color from being painted or taped over to protect the grout so that it can be easily stained at a different point in time. Grout stains should be applied before painting the tile and allowed to dry thoroughly, several days, before tile is painted.
-
2
Clean the floor surface to remove products that can prevent paint and primer from adhering correctly---dirt, wax and oil. Allow the floor to dry for two days.

-
3
Roughen the tile surface by sanding with a 220 grit carbide sandpaper. Vacuum the floor with hand attachments to remove grit and dirt and wipe with a damp mop or cloth to remove any left behind debris.
-
4
Leave the grout exposed for painting or protect the grout color by masking grout lines with painter's tape.
-
5
Protect the rest of the room from paint. Mask walls, fixtures and appliances with drop cloths, painter's paper and painter's tape.
-
6
Use a primer designed for ceramic tile. Follow the manufacturer's directions for application. Spray primers are a quick, easy way to apply primer.
-
7
Choose an oil-based paint to use over tile primer. Water-based paint has a tendency to peel with time and use. Use a paint sprayer for quick application of paint. Professional sprayers provide a clog free spraying application and can be rented from local home improvement and paint stores.
