How to Time Your Trip to San Diego

Sunny San Diego, at the southern tip of California, has great beaches, a famous zoo and plenty of outdoor activities.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    General Considerations

  1. Step 1

Decide what time of year you'll be visiting. The weather is basically perfect here, but if you want to roast on the beach, time your visit between May and October.

  2. Step 2

Don't come during the summer if you want more space to yourself on the beach. School is out, and so are all the kids.

  3. Step 3

Find out if there are any festivals or events you'd like to check out.

  4. Step 4

Try to find inexpensive flights, transportation and accomodations.

  5. Step 5

Check the weather forecast shortly before leaving, and pack accordingly. Even in the coldest months, San Diego's high temperatures average 68 degrees F.

  6. Seasonal Events and Attractions

  7. Step 1

Catch sight of a migrating whale just off the San Diego coast from mid-December to mid-March only.

  8. Step 2

Hit San Diego in June for the Del Mar Fair, featuring a carnival, a livestock show and evening entertainment.

  9. Step 3

Become a kid again as you marvel at the animated and larger-than-life creations at Legoland.

  10. Step 4

Spend the day in the company of some of the world's most exotic, uncaged animals at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park.

  11. Step 5

Hop on the ferry from the Broadway Pier to the ornate and historic Hotel del Coronado.

  12. Step 6

Wiggle your toes in the sands of one of San Diego's legendary beaches; two of the most popular are Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.

  13. Step 7

Cross the border into Tijuana, where you'll find crowded streets, tacky souvenirs, cheap eats and the excellent Museo de Las Identidades Mexicanas.

on 11/22/2005 It's possible to enjoy relaxing on the beach at any time of year in San Diego, but if you want to swim, you might want to visit between mid-July and early September. Although the air is warm for a month before and after that, the water is still COLD!
