How to Make a DVI-to-RCA Component Cable

Many newer computers and laptops use DVI ports to connect to projectors and monitors (versus a VGA port). If you are looking to connect your new computer (either Mac or PC) to a large television screen, you need to convert the DVI port to an RCA video port. Luckily, performing this conversion does not take a long amount of time and can be done without much knowledge of the computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the DVI-to-RCA video adapter to the DVI port on your computer. The adapter may have tightening screws around the DVI connection. It is a good idea to fasten these screws tight to create a secure lock.

    • 2

Connect either a yellow cable or S-Video cable to the RCA side of the adapter (depending on what the adapter side is). If there is a yellow port, you need to connect the yellow RCA cable, but if there is a small circular port with several small holes for cable pins, you need to connect the S-Video cable to it.

    • 3

Connect either the yellow RCA cable or S-Video cable to the appropriate video port on the television. Power on the television and press the "Video" button on either the television or the remote control.

    • 4

Remove the DVI-to-RCA adapter after you have completed what you need to do. Make sure to unscrew the fastening screws before pulling at the adapter. Failing to do so can result in damage to either the adapter or the computer itself.
