How to Remove a Windshield Wiper Arm on a Chevrolet

The wiper arm on a Chevrolet Cavalier is the steel arm that holds the wiper blade as it moves across the windshield. The wiper blades are anchored on splined shafts bolted to the cowl, just below the windshield. The motion of the wiper blades is driven by an electric motor which connects to the wiper arms by two long actuating rods.

Instructions

    • 1

Check and make sure the wiper arms are in the park position. This is the position the wipers rest in when they are turned off.

    • 2

Note the relationship between the wiper blades and the molding on the bottom of the windshield.

    • 3

Place masking tape on the windshield to mark the position of the blades. You will need these marks when you reinstall the wiper arms.

    • 4

Examine the base of the wiper arm shaft. You will notice a small metal tab.

    • 5

Depress this tab, using a flat-blade screwdriver.

    • 6

Pull the wiper arm off the splined shaft.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are removing both arms, mark the left and the right arms. They are different lengths and are not interchangeable.
