How to Adjust a Dish TV
Satellite television has become an entertainment staple in many societies across the world. Your satellite dish system will provide you with programming from nearly any location in which you desire to set it up. The quality of service you receive depends on how well you have adjusted the aim of your dish for the maximum signal strength reception from your provider's satellite. You can adjust your system without any need to hire the services of an installer, provided you follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
Things You'll Need
- Owner's manual from your provider
- Open-ended wrench sets (standard and metric)

1
Check to make sure no trees or structures have been placed within the line of sight of your dish. If necessary, move your dish to a location that has an unblocked view of the sky.
-
2
Consult the owner's manual that came with your provider's equipment and find the two major settings recommended: azimuth (left/right) and elevation (up/down). These settings are given in "degrees," and the numbers appear on the adjustment sliders of your dish.
-
-
3
Using a wrench that fits the bolt head on your particular dish azimuth sliding adjustment groove, loosen the head and slide the dish left or right until the indicator is pointing to the manufacturer's recommended azimuth setting. Tighten the bolt head to lock your setting in place.
-
4
Select a wrench that fits the bolt head for your dish's elevation setting. Loosen the bolt head and slide the dish up, or down, until the indicator is pointing to the manufacturer's recommended elevation setting. Tighten the bolt head to lock this elevation setting into place.
-
5
Turn on your receiver and your television, and use the receiver's menu system for navigating to the installation screen. Your instruction manual should adequately direct you to this screen for your particular receiver, and you should see a signal strength bar on your television screen.
-
6
Fine-tune your dish for the maximum possible signal strength reading on the signal strength bar. Move the dish one degree at a time, doing so first in the azimuth directions. Once you've achieved the maximum signal through this adjustment, repeat the action in the elevation setting, one degree at a time.
-
7
Tighten down the bolt heads to prevent your dish from losing your settings due to wind or other weather conditions.

Tips & Warnings
If you are able, run an extension cord to the location of your mounted dish. Plug in and connect your receiver and a small portable television set by your dish to make your job easier.
For optimum performance, keep the surface of your dish free of dust, mud and snow accumulation, which may affect your signal.
