1
Check that your pool liner is leaking in the first place. Take a bucket and place it on the steps leading into your pool. Fill the bucket with water to the same level as the pool water. Mark both the pool water level and the water level inside the bucket on the bucket. Check back in a day or two. If the water is at the same level in the bucket as in the pool, then the water has been evaporating. If the pool water is lower than the water level in the bucket, you have a leak.

2
Examine the pool liner. It's possible that the leak is caused by damage that is big enough to see. Spend extra time checking around any equipment that is running in and out of the pool, as it is easier for a leak to start in those locations.

3
Turn all pool pumps and filters off in your in-ground pool. Pour a small container of food coloring into the pool.
-
4
Follow the food coloring. If there is a leak in the liner, the food coloring will begin traveling through the water toward that leak.
-
5
Call a professional if the food coloring does not lead you to a visible leak in the liner.
