How to Attach Snow Chains to a Tire

Snow chains are placed on vehicles to help them safely navigate snowy roads or climb mountain roads in snowy or icy conditions. Attaching snow chains can be performed by following a few simple steps, giving an automobile's tires that extra grip to send it safely on its route.

Instructions

  1. Attaching the Chains

    • 1

Park the vehicle on a level area with about 10 feet of clearance on all sides of the automobile and set the parking brake. You'll need the space to properly move the tires onto the chains.

    • 2

Lay one set of chains in front of each tire. The end of the chain should be flush against the front of the tire, touching it.

    • 3

Drive onto the tire chains moving ahead about 2 feet. Get out of the vehicle and check the alignment, making sure that the sides of the chains are parallel to both sides of the tires.

    • 4

Drive the car slowly until the tires are completely over the rungs on the chains. Check the ends of the chains to see if they are able to be connected.

    • 5

Take hold of the long ends of the chains and place one end over the outside of the wheel and one end on the inside.

    • 6

Use the hooks or clips (depending on the type of chains you have) to connect to an open link in the chain, forming a circle around the tire.
