How to Stop Bugs Crawling in the House Under the Door

Tip

Cut a door sweep with a hacksaw if the piece is too long for your doorway.

Warning

Read the label on any insecticides to make sure they cannot harm children or pets if they come in contact with them.

Bugs are a part of life, but you do not have to live with them in your home. As insects seek food or shelter, the space between the bottom of your door and the floor is just tall enough to let crawling bugs such as spiders, ants and roaches in. Because you know where the point of entry is, you can take effective measures to ensure that this opening is barricaded, without interruption to the functionality of your door.

Install door sweeps on the bottoms of any doors that open to the outside. Follow the directions on the package to attach the piece to the door using the included screws and your screwdriver and/or drill. The sweep is an aluminum casing attached to a bendable rubber piece that forms an effective barrier so that bugs cannot enter your home.

Vacuum the doorways frequently to remove potential food sources, such as crumbs.

Remove bug-enticing items such as trash cans and pet dishes. Place them farther away from the door.

Spray an organic insect repellent under your door. These chemical-free solutions kill insects and are safe for the indoors because they do not harm humans or pets.

Trim away plant parts that touch the exterior doors or walls of your home to make it harder for bugs to access the inside.
