How to Rip & Burn Movies to a DVD

Ripping and burning a movie can take quite some time. Burning to a disc won't take long, but the ripping part will take about as long as the movie. This is because the ripper moves frame by frame through the movie to remove any encoding that will prevent it from being burned to a disc. Ripping a DVD isn't always necessary to burn the movie. If you do have to rip the movie, chances are that it's illegal to make copies of it without permission.

  1. How to Rip and Burn Movies to a DVD

    • 1

Insert the DVD movie you would like to rip and burn into your computer's DVD drive. If the movie is already on your computer, you likely won't have to rip it before you burn it.

    • 2

Open your DVD ripper software and follow the instructions. You will usually just have to open your DVD in the ripper. Just click "Open" and navigate to your file. Once you find your file, click on "Begin Ripping." If you need to convert the file (i.e from mpeg to avi), this is where you will do it. Click on what file you would like your movie to be saved as before you start ripping. You should see your movie being ripped frame by frame. Don't sit at the computer and wait for this to finish, it could take a few hours.

    • 3

Save your file to a folder once it's done ripping.

    • 4

Remove your DVD movie and insert a blank DVD into your computer's DVD drive. Some computers have two disk drives: one for CD and DVD writing, and one for playback only of CDs or DVDs. Make sure you insert your blank disc into the correct drive.

    • 5

      Open your DVD burning program.

    • 6

Open the movie file you just ripped in your DVD burner. Click on "Open" and then navigate to your movie file. Your burning program will have a column that shows what you have on your blank DVD, There should be nothing there if it is blank. Move your file over to this column.

    • 7

Click on "Begin Burning" and wait for you movie to finish. This won't take nearly close to as long as it did to rip your movie. Most burners will burn a DVD in several minutes.
