Your automobile, just like all others, is provided with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at the time it leaves the manufacturing facility. To the uninitiated, the VIN appears only as a serial number consisting of a long and meaningless string of numbers and letters. Although it is true that a VIN is a unique "fingerprint" for your automobile, the series of letters and digits have a definite meaning. Knowing how to actually read your automobile's VIN depends upon your understanding of its sections and the industry-standard encoding used to produce the entire VIN identification plate.

Locate the VIN plate on your automobile. Due to automotive industry standards, it will always be located in the lower corner of the front window on the driver's side. The plate is generally recessed into the dash, in the furthest portion of that corner, and is usually a long, rectangular, metallic plate.

Write the entire set of numbers and digits onto a piece of paper so you may take it with you to your computer.

A VIN is broken down into sections, each with a meaning, as follows: first character, country of manufacture; second character, manufacturer identification code; third character, vehicle type; fourth to eighth characters, vehicle descriptor section; ninth character, check digit; tenth character, model year; eleventh character, plant identification number; twelfth character, vehicle Identifier (individual fingerprint).

Look up each section of the VIN and write the information on your paper under your vehicle's VIN you wrote down. You should then have derived complete information for your vehicle from the VIN including all of the information mentioned in Step 3.
