Instructions

    • 1

Draw an outline on the wall for the phone jack. Place the face plate for the phone jack on the wall and trace around it with a pencil. Draw an inner outline ½ an inch inside the outer outline. The inner outline will be the hole for the phone jack.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the wall for the phone jack with a drywall saw. Cut along the lines of the inner outline mark and then remove the piece of drywall.

    • 3

Run the phone wire through the floor and up the wall to the hole.

    • 4

Cut one inch off the outer cover of the phone wire with the wire cutters. Be careful not to cut the smaller wires under the outside cover.

    • 5

Strip ½-inch of insulation off the ends of each of the four smaller wires with the wire cutters.

    • 6

Connect each of the smaller wires to the matching screws in the jack plate with the screwdriver. Loosen the screws on the jack plate with the screwdriver and wrap the wires around the screws. Make sure to match the colored wires on the screws.

    • 7

Secure the jack plate to the wall with screws, using the screwdriver.

    • 8

Attach the face plate with screws, using the screwdriver, and then plug a phone into the jack to see if it is working properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • A standard modular phone jack can be installed directly into drywall or into an electrical box mounted in the wall.
