How to Caulk Mulled Windows

A mulled window simply refers to two or more window units that have been joined together instead of being two separate mainframes. The windows can be side by side or one on top of the other, but operate independently. A mulled window requires just as much insulation as any other window unit. Properly caulking the frame will protect a room from drafts, leakage and contamination. A silicone-based sealant and a caulking gun will be the primary tools for accomplishing the task at hand. Instructions

    • 1

Make sure your workspace is well ventilated before proceeding with the caulk. Wipe down the targeted seams on the mulled windows with a damp cloth to remove any loose dirt or debris.

    • 2

Mask off the areas on the window frame that you don't want caulked. Cut open the tip on a tube of caulk using a utility knife and load it into a caulking gun.

    • 3

Squeeze a bead of the caulk no more than one quarter of an inch thick directly into one end of an exposed seam on the mulled window frame. Continue to apply the sealant very steadily along the entire length of the joint between the window frame and the wall.

    • 4

Repeat the same steps for each exposed side of the mulled window; most applications will only need four sides caulked since the windows share a single frame. Allow the silicone sealant to cure overnight.
