How to Remove Dirt From a Crawl Space

Even when a crawl space has flooring, dirt has a way of creeping into it. Dirt will absorb moisture and cause mold growth. It is especially important to reduce the causes of mold in a crawl space because they are already prone to mold from lack of ventilation. Remove dirt from crawl spaces that have been covered with a vapor barrier or flooring. Be careful with dirt crawl spaces, however, as removing large amounts of dirt in these spaces may cause structural stress to your house and is not recommended without consulting a contractor first. You can remove loose dirt in these spaces and keep them as clean and dry as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the crawl space floor using a broom. If the space is cramped, you may need to use a hand broom.

    • 2

Sweep the dirt onto a dust pan and transfer it to a plastic bag. Only fill the bag as much as you can lift. If you need to remove a lot of dirt, then consider purchasing industrial strength bags.

    • 3

Dispose of the plastic bag. For small amounts of dirt, you can just dispose of it outside, but for large amounts, you may want to get rid of it at a compost pile or similar facility.

Use the hose attachment on a wet/dry vacuum to get dirt in hard to reach places. If the crawl space is fairly dry, you can use a regular shop vacuum as well. If there is a lot of dirt, you may have to empty the vacuum several times.
