Removing All Traces Of Mascara

1
A Few Dos and Don'ts
Price doesn't really dictate how good or bad a mascara is. Try several brands until you find what you like best.
Avoid waterproof mascara except when absolutely necessary as it tends to dry out your lashes and is extremely difficult to remove without scrubbing at your eyelids.
If you use an eyelash curler, curl your lashes before applying mascara. Curling them after mascara application tends to break and pull lashes out.
Remove all traces of mascara before going to bed to avoid further drying out and damage to your lashes.

Make Mascara Easier to Remove
When removing mascara, you want to be very gentle with the eye area. Avoid scrubbing and tugging at the skin, since this leads to premature sagging and can be irritating to your eyes.
To remove mascara with greater ease, take a clean washcloth and run it under very warm water, then wring it out. Fold the washcloth in thirds and hold the moist compress over your closed eyes for a minute or so. This helps to loosen the waxes and other dried-on ingredients sticking to your lashes, and will help make removing the mascara much easier.

Removing Mascara With a Commercial Makeup Remover
There are several good makeup removers on the market, such as Neutrogena Oil-Free Makeup Remover or Clinique Naturally Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. Saturate a cotton pad (pads work better than cotton buds) with the makeup remover. Close one eye and wipe downward several times. Turn the pad over and repeat. Wet a clean pad with the makeup remover and repeat with the other eye. Continue until the cotton pad shows no sign of mascara.

Removing Mascara With Home Products
A few of the best mascara removers may be items you already have around the house: olive oil or Vaseline. These two products are not only inexpensive, but they don't sting your eyes like many commercial eye makeup removers do, plus they're good for your lashes and the skin around your eyes.
Put some Vaseline or olive oil on a cotton pad, close one eye and dab it on your eyelashes. Wipe downward several times, turn the pad over and repeat. Use another clean pad dipped in the oil or Vaseline, and repeat until no visible signs of mascara remain. Repeat on the other eye.

Tips & Warnings
If you buy mascara and it already seems dried out, take it back for a refund. Many makeup companies now put dates on their packages.
Don't share mascara since it harbors bacteria and you could end up with pink eye or another virus the other person may be carrying.
Replace your mascara every three to four months. Again, bacteria builds up. Also, mascara dries out. You may notice your mascara flaking or even irritating your eyes. This is a sure sign that you need a new tube.
