How to Miter the Inside Corner on Crown Molding
Crown molding around the top of a room can give an elegant and finished look to the space. When installing straight across walls, there aren't really any issues. The inside corners, however, often prove challenging because they need to be mitered to fit, or they will look fairly unattractive. Getting the angle right calls for a little preparation and thought, but is pretty easy when you master the technique. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure and mark the crown molding leading into the corner on both walls. Take the measurement all the way into the corner.
-
2
Set your miter box or saw up. Label a piece of duct or masking tape as the "wall" and another as the "ceiling." Attach the wall label to the fence on the miter, and attach the ceiling tag to the table. It may be confusing at first, but working upside down like this really does help.

3
Place the left-side piece of the crown molding in the miter box. Put the top, or shoulder, of the molding on the ceiling label and the bottom, or foot, on the wall sticker. Make sure you're holding the pieces at an angle, as most crown molding does not rest flush against the wall. Watch the video under "Resources" if you have any questions.

4
Rotate the saw blade to the 45-degree mark on the left. Inside corners need this spear-shaped piece to stab into the corner; outside corners need the opposite shape.
-
5
Line up the cut mark from Step 1 with the saw blade. Verify that all the pieces are lined up correctly, and make the cut.
-
6
Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 for the right-hand piece of molding, but place the saw in the 45-degree mark on the right. Make sure both pieces were held in the saw at the same angle when they were cut.
-
7
Remove the pieces and check the joint. They should line up nearly seamlessly.

Tips & Warnings
To make outside corners, use the same steps outlined above with the saw blade turned to the opposite position indicated: In Step 4, the saw is held on the left--for an outside corner, set the saw to cut on the right.
Be careful when using a saw or any sharp implements. Watch all of your hands and fingers.
