How to Get a Computer to Recognize a Sony Memory Stick

Sony memory sticks are most often used in Sony digital cameras. These memory sticks are slightly longer than the standard SD card, so only Sony devices and special memory readers are capable of reading the cards. However, you may find, initially, that your computer has trouble reading the memory stick. You can overcome this obstacle within only a few moments of your time, allowing you to view the contents of the Sony memory stick on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the USB cable into either a Sony digital camera or digital memory stick reader. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on the computer.

    • 2

Insert the driver installation disk (if you are using a digital memory stick reader) into your computer. After the disk launches, read through and accept the license agreement (you are not allowed to install the driver if you do not accept the agreement). Follow the remaining prompts to complete the driver setup.

    • 3

Insert the Sony memory stick into the camera or memory stick reader and power on the device. Wait for the computer to state that it has detected a new memory device.

    • 4

Open "My Computer" (also known as "Computer" starting with Microsoft Windows Vista). You are going to see a removable memory disk icon. Double-click this icon to access the content currently saved on your Sony memory stick.
