How to Hook Up a Laptop to a PC Projector

Transform a laptop into a piece of home theater equipment by connecting the computer to a PC projector. Besides a projector and laptop, the connection requires a blank wall or projection screen and a VGA (Video Graphics Array) cable, which is available at electronics and computer stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the computer and turn off the projector while making connections.

    • 2

Insert one end of the VGA cable into the laptop's video port. This is a 15-hole, trapezoid-shaped connection jack where an external monitor would normally be attached. The plug only inserts one way, so do not attempt to force it into the port.

    • 3

Tighten the locking screws on each side of the plug to secure it to the laptop.

    • 4

Plug the other end of the VGA cable into the "Video In" port on the projector and tighten the locking screws.

    • 5

Turn on the laptop and projector.

    • 6

Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the computer display and double-click "Control Panel," and then choose "Display."

    • 7

Click the "Settings" tab and choose "Plug-and-Play Monitor" to instruct the computer to send display information to the projector as well as to the laptop screen. This enables the user to monitor the presentation from the laptop without constantly looking up at the projected image.

Click "Screen Resolution" to set the laptop to the same resolution used by the projector, for example, 1024x768 pixels (a pixel is a unit of visual data). This information will be printed on the projector, typically on a sticker or plate attached to the back of the component.
