How to Size Duct Work

Properly sized duct work is essential for an energy-efficient HVAC system. Duct work sized too small will experience insufficient air flow and a high velocity of air, causing noise. If duct work is too large, efficiency is reduced, causing premature heat loss before the air reaches its destination.       Measure the square footage of the room you want to size the duct for. Calculate the square footage by measuring the length and width of the room and multiplying them.

      Calculate the CFM (cubic feet per minute) for the room. You want 1 CFM per square foot of space, so if the room is 225 square feet, you want 225 CFM for the room.

      Size the duct work by using a duct calculator to convert the CFM to appropriate duct size. If using the above sample of 225 CFM, the duct size would be an 8-inch round or 8-inch-by-7-inch square duct.
