How to Remove a Speedometer Cable From a Motorcycle

Motorcycle speedometer cables are driven by a transmission-mounted or a front wheel-mounted drive mechanism. The drive rotates the inner cable inside of the outer sleeve. The inner cable runs from the drive unit into the back of the speedometer and is held in place by the sleeve. Tight bends in the outer sleeve, lack of lubrication and old age can cause the cable to drag, causing the speedometer to surge. Cables in this condition are near the end of their lives and may fail at any time.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip the threaded collar where the cable meets the back of the speedometer by hand or with pliers. Unscrew the collar completely from the back of the speedometer and remove the inner cable from the speedometer.

    • 2

Remove any supporting clamps or brackets that may be holding the cable to the vehicle. Note the cable routing and pull the top of the cable down to free it from the vehicle.

Locate the speedometer drive unit. Transmission drive speedometers will have a threaded collar similar to the speedometer. Unscrew the collar by hand or with pliers and remove the cable from the drive. Front wheel speedometer drives have the outer sleeve threaded directly into the drive unit. Rotate the outer sleeve counterclockwise until it disengages from the drive unit.
