How to Transport a Ladder on an SUV

Transporting ladders from one place to another is easy if you drive a truck or have a van with lots of room in the back; but if you have an SUV and you need to get a ladder and several people to a destination, you need to get creative. The answer is to mount the ladder to the roof rack on the SUV, which will allow you to fill the inside with people and the roof with your equipment.

• Rope
• Utility knife

Instructions

1. Lift the ladder up onto the roof of the SUV such that the ladder is running the length of the vehicle, and the ladder is supported by the cross braces, not the side rails or the roof skin itself.

2. Cut two 3-foot lengths of rope using the utility knife. Tie the rope around the rungs on the ladder such that each rope section goes over a rung, around the roof rack cross brace and back, then tie it in a knot. Repeat this process for the other cross brace.

3. Wrap a section of rope around the side of the ladder and then to the side posts along the sides of the roof rack. Tie one rope to the driver's side of the rack and one to the passenger side. This will pull the ladder against itself and ensure that it won't come loose.
