How to Sew Stretch Vinyl

Stretch vinyl is a fairly new product on the fashion scene. Patent vinyl cloth has gained popularity in fashion design due to the sleek look and flexibility for use in a wide range of garments. The cloth is made of two layers, one shiny side and one a cloth-like backing.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the pieces to be sewn by cutting out all areas according to patterns. Eliminate multiple darts or gatherings as much as possible as they do not work well in vinyl applications.

    • 2

Place the two pieces together and avoid unnecessary pinning by taping with
cellophane tape in large intervals. If the pattern pieces are small, refrain from pinning altogether.

    • 3

Use a serger machine if at all possible. The serger stitching stretches, allows for
narrow seam allowances, and often trims the fabric at the edge. With right sides
together, simply place the fabric under the presser foot, drop the foot, and stitch.

    • 4

Refrain from excessive pinning when using a standard machine. Install a
machine needle that is not only sharp but thin, numbering no higher that a
size 11. Do not use ball point or leather needles as they perforate the vinyl
and cause tearing. Stitch according to pattern lines. Trim seam allowances and zigzag after a proper fit is assured.

    • 5

Adjust tension to longer stitches for longer runs so fewer needle holes will occur,
and use the shorter stitch lengths where possible.

    • 6

Do not iron vinyl. Ironing will cause the two layers to separate, so select designs that will
require little or no pressing. You can apply pressure and smooth the garment in areas where ironing would normally be needed by using a cloth wrapped around your fingers.
