How to Fix a Slow Vista PC
Microsoft Vista offers many new features over Windows XP. Some of these features include easier network setup, robust security controls and built-in diagnostics to help troubleshoot common problems. However, the operating system can seem sluggish or even unresponsive for some users. To fully enjoy the features presented with Windows Vista, you must understand how to fix problems that could be causing Vista to react in a sluggish manner.

Turn off Vista's New Visual Effects

Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel."

Click "System and maintenance" and select "Performance information tools."

Select "Adjust visual effects" and choose the "Visual effects" tab.

Select one of Vista's automatic adjustment options or choose "Custom" to alter each setting individually.

Click "Apply" to apply the settings, then click "OK."
Adjust Your Computer's Start Up Programs

Open the start menu and type "Config" into the search bar. Choose "System Configuration," and press "Enter."

Click the "Startup" tab. Choose the programs that you don't want to start up when your computer boots up.

Click "Apply" and click "OK." In the warning screen, click either "Restart" or "Exit without restart."
Remove Programs You No Longer Use

Open the "Start" menu and click "Control Panel."

Click "Uninstall a program" under the Programs section.

Navigate the list of installed programs to locate software you no longer use.

Click the name of a program and click "Uninstall/Change" to start the software's uninstaller.

Choose the option to uninstall and click "Next" to uninstall the selected program. Close the Control Panel when you are finished.

Check that your computer meets the recommended requirements for a better experience. Microsoft.com lists the recommended system requirements as a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and support for DirectX 9 graphics with at least 128 MB of graphics memory.
Upgrade your computer with more RAM. The recommended minimum is 1 GB of RAM, but adding additional RAM to your computer's setup can improve performance.
