Airline miles are a great way for consumers to make their money work harder for them. Many companies have partnered with the airlines to offer specials on accumulating airline miles through purchases and frequency of services. All that's required is a major credit card and a simple enrollment form. Which credit card and which airline to choose requires a small amount of research to determine maximum benefit.

Accumulating Air Miles

1. Investigate credit cards with frequent flier options available to customers and which airlines are associated with them. You should be able to accumulate airline miles on purchases at a rate that is conducive to redeeming them. That is, it shouldn't take an unreasonable amount of time to earn enough reward points to cash them in for a flight.

2. Contact the airline directly. Many airlines now have frequent flier enrollment programs that will link with a major credit card in order to track miles. Enroll in one of these programs (enrollment is free) by using their online enrollment program. An application for a major credit card that may be used to accumulate the airline's version of reward points (airline miles) will be made available at the time of enrollment in their rewards program.

3. Accumulate airline miles/reward points by making purchases with the linked credit card. Many airlines will offer "specials" on certain services that will garner double or increased points.
