How to Start a Gas Powered Scooter

Scooters are handy little vehicles, made for urban areas and for recreational use, and they are very popular overseas. If you've never driven a scooter, it's a different experience than riding a motorcycle or driving an ATV. Starting a scooter is unusual (and potentially confusing) as well, as there are two ways to start it. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2007 Vespa scooter, but the process is similar for other scooters as well.

Instructions

  1. Key Start

    • 1

Make sure the kickstand on the scooter is up and the rear wheel is off the ground.

    • 2

Sit in the seat and hold your left hand on the steering. Hold down the brake lever at the same time.

    • 3

Place the key in the ignition, and turn it all the way to the right until you hear the engine fire.

    Kick-Start

    • 4

Make sure the kickstand on the scooter is up and the rear wheel is off the ground.

    • 5

Place your key in the ignition, and move it to the "On" position. Twist the throttle so that the engine is getting a little bit of gas, but don't turn it more than halfway.

    • 6

Place your foot on the kick-start lever, and slowly push the lever down. Continue this motion, pushing down harder and faster until the engine starts.
