  1. Cracking Soybeans

    • 1

Place the grain mill on a hard base, such as a table or countertop. This will prevent slipping. The grain mill will crack the soybean, cutting each bean in half. Grain mills can be purchased at your local home supply store.

    • 2

Place a bowl directly under the grain mill so it catches the soybeans, once you start cracking them. Use a bowl big enough to hold the soybeans.

    • 3

Place a bag of dry soybeans into the opening at the top of the grain mill. According to tempeh.info, you can place 600 grams of dry soybeans in the grain mill, if you desire. Dried soybeans can be purchase at any supermarket or health store.

    • 4

Place your hand (left or right, depending where the handle is located) on the grain mill handle. Start turning the handle away for you. This will begin the cracking process, sending each bean down the grain mill shaft, cutting each in half. Continue turning the handle until every bean is cracked. If there are leftover soybeans on the top, use a spoon to push the beans in the shaft. Never use your hands to push them down.

    • 5

Remove the bowl containing the cracked soybeans from under the grain mill. Use your newly cracked soybeans any way you desire.
