Buy polyurethane varnish that's appropriate to the situation. Polyurethane varnish comes in varieties that can be used for floors, cupboards and such outdoor projects as decks. To ensure good weatherproofing and longevity, choose an outdoor polyurethane varnish for your pine stump.

Apply the polyurethane varnish using a paintbrush. Paint the pine stump with a thin, even coat of polyurethane. Always paint in the direction of the wood's grain. Allow the polyurethane to dry for 2 to 3 hours.

Sand the pine stump to rough up the layer of polyurethane. This provides a good foundation for the next coat of varnish.

Paint on a second layer of polyurethane. Allow it to dry for 2 to 3 hours, and repeat. Apply 3 to 4 coats of polyurethane. Do not sand the final coat.
