How to Paint a Pine Stump With Polyurethane

When a pine tree has died or outlived it usefulness, it is often often cut down. A homeowner then faces the issue of what to do with the unsightly stump left in the yard.       Buy polyurethane varnish that's appropriate to the situation. Polyurethane varnish comes in varieties that can be used for floors, cupboards and such outdoor projects as decks. To ensure good weatherproofing and longevity, choose an outdoor polyurethane varnish for your pine stump.

      Apply the polyurethane varnish using a paintbrush. Paint the pine stump with a thin, even coat of polyurethane. Always paint in the direction of the wood's grain. Allow the polyurethane to dry for 2 to 3 hours.

      Sand the pine stump to rough up the layer of polyurethane. This provides a good foundation for the next coat of varnish.

      Paint on a second layer of polyurethane. Allow it to dry for 2 to 3 hours, and repeat. Apply 3 to 4 coats of polyurethane. Do not sand the final coat.

  • Use your pine stump as part of your landscaping by placing planters on top of it and allowing the plants to cascade down the stump.

  • Polyurethane can be toxic to people, animals and plants. It's also highly flammable. Always treat it with caution.
