How to Engrave a Silver-Plated Goblet
A beautiful silver goblet makes a wonderful gift or addition to your home. Engraving a design or special message on the goblet gives it an individual touch. Engraving on metal such as silver is done with a home engraver kit that etches into the metal with a variety of tips. These kits work on most metals, but the harder the metal, the shallower the engraving will be. Silver is soft enough that it will engrave very well. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Begin by finding a stencil of the design you want to engrave. If you cannot find a stencil and want to work freehand, make a template of what you plan to engrave on the goblet on a piece of drawing paper. This will give you the chance to practice and will ensure that you can create the design/lettering you have in mind. Also, practice engraving on scrap metal before you start on the goblet. Some kits come with trial glass, but old glassware will work as well.

2
Set up your work area. Make sure you have a flat, stable surface on which to work. Situate the goblet so that the surface you are engraving upon is facing up, then ensure that it is securely in place and will not move while you are in the process of engraving. Before you begin, put on your safety goggles and ventilation mask.

Position the stencil, if you are using one, on the goblet and tape it in place so that it will not shift while you are working.

Choose a tip. Read the instructions included with the engraving kit to figure out which tip will be best for the design you are creating.

5
Engrave your design. Work slowly and carefully for the best results.
