How to Repair My Bonsai Tree

There are few hobbies that require the time and determination that being a bonsai enthusiast does. A bonsai can take over a decade to fully reach its desired look, therefore making any injuries or damages to the tree detrimental to the final outcome. When wiring branches into their desired positions, sometimes the branch can crack. As long as the branch isn't completely broken away from the tree it can usually be repaired.

Things You'll Need

  • Bonsai
  • Liquid super glue
  • Filtered water
  • Small paint brush

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area of the snapped limb by using a small paint brush to lightly run clean filtered water over the break in the branch. This will ensure that there is no foreign debris in the area that could lead to the limb not setting or to an infection. The last thing needed is to turn a small problem into a large one.

    • 2

Take any brand of liquid super glue and apply sparingly to the edges of the fracture in the wood. Try not to get the glue on the green parts of the branch because these are the parts that will grow to heal the break. Press the branch back into the position it should be in and hold for one to two minutes to ensure a strong bond.

    • 3

Apply one more layer of glue to the actual break to make sure that there is a seal to keep the branch from drying out. If the branch dries out it will die and will have to be removed from the tree entirely.

    • 4

After a couple of days, rewire the branch to the position it needs to grow into. Take care not to bend where the break is. Don't worry about wiring the branch, the super glue won't let the break come apart.

    • 5

After roughly three to four months the branch should be healed and the glue should start to naturally fall off of the wound.

Tips & Warnings

  • This process should leave minimum scarring and allow your branch to heal quickly with minimum effort.

  • Always have liquid super glue on hand for emergencies.
