How to Put Tire Chains on a 4X4 Dually
Tire chains make a huge difference in snowy or icy weather. Some states require chains during bad storms on certain roads, so it is helpful to have them just in case you need them. When you're driving a 4x4, it is hard to believe that anything can get in your way much less with a dually. With two sets of wheels on the rear axle, you carry heavier loads and pull heavier trailers than many other vehicles, but driving in snowy or icy conditions with chains provides you much more traction.

1
Lay the tire chains out for the front tires on the truck and untangle them. Arrange them so the side with the connection hooks faces away from the front of the car and the side with the free links is directly in front of the tires.
-
2
Make sure the hooks attaching the cross chains to the long chains are facing down toward the ground. They can damage tires if they are oriented in the wrong direction. Roll your front tires onto the chains.

3
Lift the hook on the inside of the tire and hook it to the free links on the inside of the tire. Attach the hook on the outside of the chain to the free links on the same side. Repeat this step on the other tire. If your chains have outside fasteners or bungees, connect them.
-
4
Pull on the chains and try to fit your hand underneath. If your hand fits, tighten the fasteners or bungees. Some of the hooks on the chains have tightening mechanisms.
-
5
Set out a second set of tire chains in front of the outside rear tires of the dually. Repeat steps 1 through 4 with this set. Drive a quarter mile under thirty miles per hour, and pull over again. Repeat Step 4 again with all four tires.

Tips & Warnings
If your truck still feels slippery under the icy conditions, you can remove the chains from the outer dual tires and install a set of dual triple chains over the dual tires.
You should always use two sets of tire chains on a four-wheel drive vehicle to get the best stability from your truck. Otherwise, you risk losing steering or breaking capabilities. Only use chains that are the correct size for your tires according to manufacturer specifications. Never deflate tires to get chains on that are too small or allow the chains to be loose. This reduces the life and safety of the chains and the tires. Also, never drive faster than the manufacturer's recommendations for your chains.
