How to Use Two Domain Names on GoDaddy

While most web designers will find the typical web host that hosts a single site and domain suitable for their needs, occasionally a developer will need to host more than a single domain and/or site. GoDaddy, a domain registrar and web host, allows for the use of two domain names and/or sites on a single account. The user will need to ensure that they sign up for the correct hosting plan in order to complete this tutorial.

Instructions

  1. Using both Domain Names with the Service

    • 1

Register both domain names through GoDaddy if you have not done so already. If you already have two domains from another registrar, transfer control of them to GoDaddy. The site's support forum contains documentation on how to complete this process.

    • 2

Sign up for a hosting plan. If you are registering a domain name, GoDaddy will give you this option during the registration process. Otherwise, sign up for a hosting plan without the option to purchase a domain name. The registration process will allow you to specify domains later.

    • 3

Select either a Deluxe or Unlimited Plan for hosting on either the Linux or Windows platform, depending on the needs for the website itself. The economy plan will not allow for multiple domains.

    • 4

Complete the registration process and upload your content to GoDaddy's servers through any available method. If you are pointing both domains to the same website, there is no need to separate the content. If these are two different sites, place one of them in a separate folder on the server.

    • 5

Once complete, log into Account Manager, and select the "Hosting" option from my products. Where your hosting account is listed, click on "Manage Account." Under the Settings tab, you will see "Domain Management," which you can click on to start managing the domains.

    • 6

Click on "Add Domain," and add one of the domains you have transferred or have registered with GoDaddy. In the Folder field, enter the location where the files are stored on the server. Repeat this step for as many domains as you would like to use with your account.

Tips & Warnings

  • GoDaddy Deluxe or Unlimited accounts will allow for the hosting of an unlimited number of domains, but keep in mind you still must abide by an accountwide bandwidth limit.

  • If a transfer of domain names is required, you will not be able to host the websites through GoDaddy with those domain names until the transfer is complete. This transfer may take several days.
